Inter-Mennonite agencies cooperate in disaster action
-09/09/05
Because of the enormity and diversity of the challenge represented by Hurricane Katrina, Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) has asked Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) to assist them in making material resources and emergency supplies available where MDS is engaged within the hurricane damage zone. This includes health kits, relief kits, blankets and canned food.
Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) and Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) are sister organizations within the Anabaptist tradition, acting with the Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches in Canada and the United States.
MDS conducts domestic disaster response throughout North America while MCC focuses on international peace, justice, relief and development.
MCC has said it will also support US Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches involved with the relocation of evacuees outside the disaster areas in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
MDS is continuing to accept donations, which so far amount to over 1.2 million dollars in the US, and over 200 ,000 dollars (Cdn) in Canada. These are being used to support the short- and long-term rebuilding and restoring of communities devastated by Katrina.
Mennonite Central Committee is accepting material resource donations to replenish emergency supplies already shipped to the hurricane damaged area. Call (888) 563-4676 in the US and (888) 622-6337 in Canada to make contributions by phone.
US church-based relief groups from different Christian traditions have been stepping up their efforts to assist those who survived what is possibly the worst natural disaster ever to hit the United States.
MCC and MDS say they will work “to explore further areas of partnership as this major response unfolds.”
