National conference to look at fairer finance
-31/10/05
Debt on our Doorstep, a campaign which includes dozens of Christian groups and churches, has announced it is to hold a national conference on fair finance next month.
The campaign has teamed up with the U.S National Community Reinvestment Coalition, the New Economics Foundation, Community Development Finance Association, the German Institiute for Financial Services and Fair Finance Ltd., to organise a national conference on fair finance and responsible lending.
Organisers say that the conference comes at a critical time, following considerable media focus on irresponsible lending and action by Government to improve regulation and promote alternative sources of credit.
Key note speakers at the conference include Brian Pomeroy, the Head of the Government’s Financial Inclusion Task Force, and Eric Leenders of the British Banking Association.
Crucially, the conference will also provide an opportunity to learn from campaigning organisations from the U.S and Germany and will help to develop a common programme for change.
Debt on our Doorstep is the campaign for all organisations seeking to end financial exclusion and extortionate lending.
It does not accept credit lenders as members, or receive funding from the credit industry or Government.
They have national bodies, local authorities, money advice agencies, credit unions, church groups and community based organisations amongst their members.
The conference will take place on 14th and 15th November 2005, at the Avonmouth Conference Centre, London.
