Campaigners to lobby Parliament over trade justice
-05/10/05
As crucial World Trade Organisation (WTO) talks approach in December, thousands are being urged to converge on Parliament to demand that the UK government supports the call to make poverty history by delivering trade justice rather than free trade.
The lobby in Westminster on 2 November will take place alongside similar lobbies right across Europe and around the world.
The WTO meets is due to meet in December in Hong Kong.
Campaigners are calling on the UK government and its partners in the European Union (EU) to stop pushing poor countries to open their economies. They are also asking for respect to be shown to the right of poor countries’ to decide on trade policies to help end poverty and protect their environment.
The lobby will run throughout the afternoon from 12 – 6pm, with people forming a queue outside Parliament. The queue will be colour-coded by nation and region to enable constituents to lobby their MP together.
The lobby is being organised by the Trade Justice Movement (TJM) which is working in partnership with The Co-operative Bank.
As the only high-street bank with a published Ethical Policy ñ clearly stating where it will and will not invest its customers’ money ñ the bank has a strong campaign tradition and has previously campaigned on fair trade and drop the debt.
Throughout 2005, The Co-operative Bank and its customers have been campaigning for trade justice.
