More UK vigils keep focus on Norman Kember
-13/01/06
Supporters and friends of abducted British humanitarian worker Norman Kember, who was seized in Iraq over six weeks ago along with three other Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) volunteers, are planning a series of vigils to maintain public focus on his plight.
The events in London, Cambridge and Peterborough are being organised by the Fellowship of Reconciliation UK, the religious pacifist organisation of which Dr Kember is a trustee.
Nothing has been heard of Norman Kember, Tom Fox, Harmeet Singh Sooden and James Loney for over a month ñ in spite of many high profile pleas on their behalf by Muslim leaders, Iraqi and Palestinian scholars and politicians, and tens of thousands of ordinary people.
FoR, who are cooperating with Pax Christi (the Catholic peace organisation) and CPT UK, emphasise that the vigils are for Christians, Muslims, and people of all faith and none.
The first will take place tomorrow (Saturday, 14 January 2006) in Peterborough, from noon to 1pm local time. It will be in Cathedral Square, near the Norman Arch into the Cathedral itself.
A further vigil has been organised in Cambridge, at the same hour, outside the Guildhall in the centre of the city.
The third event will be on Monday 16th January from 6pm – 7pm in Londonís famous Trafalgar Square. It will gather outside the National Gallery, opposite St Martins-in-the-Fields Church.
Those who cannot attend these three events are invited to organise local public vigils in their own geographical areas, says the Fellowship of Reconciliation.
A poster and leaflet which can be used for publicity or to put up in windows is available to download from the FoR website.
Supporters of Dr Kember and the other hostages are also suggesting that people pray for Norman, Tom, Harmeet, James and all who are being held against their will in Iraq at noon each day.
