From 28 December 2005 through to 1January 2006, the community hosted around 50,000 young people in Milan. It was the twenty-eighth annual gathering of young European Christians sponsored by Taize.

In a message sent to the meeting, Pope Benedict encouraged the participants to follow the example of Brother Roger and of Pope John Paul II by being ìpeacemakers in your turn.î

The Taize community was founded in 1940. Dedicated to fostering unity among Christians, it now includes 100 religious of different Christian denominations from 30 different countries.

Each year tens of thousands of pilgrims, mostly young people, visit the communityís centre in Burgundy.

The current Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams is known to be supportive of the work of Taize, and there have been positive relations with peace churches, charismatics and others.

The late Brother Roger Schutz’s many books include God is Love Alone and Sources of Taize.

Taize is especially known for its compelling musical work, taking traditional chant and developing it in fresh ways for modern worship settings.
