Minister to address faith leaders over human trafficking
-10/03/06
Meg Munn MP, Minister for Women will today address over 120 delegates at a consultation day on human trafficking, run by CHASTE (Churches Alert to Sex Trafficking Across Europe).
During the ìNot for Saleî event, faith leaders are expected to respond in particular to the government’s Action Plan to tackle human trafficking.
In January 2006 the government issued a consultation process surrounding proposals for a UK action plan to tackle the problem.
The “Not for Sale” conference is being billed as a strategic event for faith leaders and communities to investigate the options in the action plan, to learn more about human trafficking, particularly in the form of sexual exploitation, and to develop responses to the governmentís consultation before the deadline on April 5.

The consultation day will feature contributions from Chief Constable Dr. Tim Brain, head of ACPO Vice and Stephen Webb, Head of the Home Officeís Serious and Organised Crime Unit, as well as from engaged churches, NGOís, Criminal Justice agencies and faith leaders.
The Revd Dr. Carrie Pemberton, CEO of CHASTE said, ìI am delighted by the response we have had to this conference. In light of the governmentís ratification of the Palermo Protocol last month, the tackling Trafficking consultation and the recent launch by the Police of Operation Pentameter, this is a timely and important event. Faith groups have tremendous resources to be able to respond to the pernicious issue of Human Trafficking in the form of exploitation and it is hugely encouraging that so many experts will be gathered at this event.î
CHASTE is the interdenominational forum for the development of engaged response to the misery of human trafficking in the form of sexual exploitation. Initiated by Revd Dr Carrie Pemberton in 2003, the charity now works to develop cooperation across European churches for the prevention of sex trafficking.
