The Arabic television network Al-Jazeera has broadcast a brief and silent videotape suggesting that at least three of the four Christian peacemakers taken captive in Iraq are still alive.

The tape showed three of the four hostage Christian Peacemakers.

The tape was shown on Monday and stated that the men asked their governments to work for their release.

It was not immediately clear which of the four hostages, who disappeared on Nov. 26, was not in the video.

But Maxine Nash, a member of the Christian Peacemaker Teams in Baghdad, said the missing man was American Tom Fox, 54, of Virginia.

The tape carried a Feb. 28 date superimposed on the tape.

The broadcast comes as friends, family, Muslims and Christians joined together in vigils across the country marking 100 days since the peacemakers were abducted.

Mr Kember of Pinner, north London, American Tom Fox, 54, and Canadians James Loney, 41, and Harmeet Singh Sooden, 32, had travelled to Iraq as a “gesture of solidarity” as part of international peace group Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT).

Before the new video footage, the hostages were last seen in a short videotape broadcast by Al-Jazeera in January.
