Debt campaigners told of vital role on anniversary of ‘human chain’

Debt campaigners have been told of the vital role they continue to play in bringing about the cancellation of debt in the developing world.
The comments came on the eighth anniversary of the human chain demanding action on international debt that challenged G8 in Birmingham.

The public meeting was addressed by Ann Pettifor, formerly Director of Jubilee 2000, the group that organised the 1998 demonstration.
More than 200 people gathered in Birmingham Cathedral, including the Nigerian High Commissioner.
ìCampaigners create the platform, campaigners create the opportunity for rock stars and politicians to play their partî said Ms Pettifor.
ìNow we must address the rich ñ the poor are not the problem,î she added, calling for reinvigorated ethical principles to be embraced by the finance sector, in which debt had become a pillar supporting the whole system.
All present at the meeting were encouraged to sign the latest ëcut the stringsí campaign action from Jubilee Debt Campaign.
ìDebt relief works. But its positive impact is all too often damaged by the economic policy conditions demanded by the creditors, which also undermine democracy ñ that is why we are demanding that the UK government ëcut the stringsí so that debt cancellation is not abused as a means of making poor countries toe the line,î said Trisha Rogers, Director, Jubilee Debt Campaign
ìEight years after 70,000 people gathered in Birmingham to demand action on international debt from the G8 we can celebrate that significant amounts of debt have been cancelled and millions of people who are poor have seen some benefit. But the debt crisis is not over: celebrating progress is the inspiration to go on, still pursuing the vision of Jubilee.î Audrey Miller, organiser of the event and former co chair, Jubilee Debt Campaign.
After the meeting the Nigerian High Commissioner and other guests attended a civic reception at the Council House, where local charity Real Help presented a cheque to Jubilee Debt Campaign to encourage the campaign to continue.
Jubilee Debt Campaign is a coalition of national organisations and local and regional groups calling for 100% cancellation of unpayable and unjust poor country debts by fair and transparent means. Member organisations include churches, other faith groups, trade unions, and major aid agencies. Jubilee Debt Campaign was a core coalition of Make Poverty History.
