More than 100 people took part in the annual Jesus Surf Classic held at the weekend.

Organisers said the event, held at its traditional home of Croyde in North Devon and now in its fourteenth year was the biggest yet with £2,000 in prize money up for grabs.

Run by Christian Surfers UK, the event looked in jeopardy a few days before.

A statement on their website said; “Despite less than favourable surf predictions, the CS crew are praying that there will be sufficient waves to run the event.

“In its’ previous 13 years, there have always been waves, and we believe God will not let us down.”

It seems that God didn’t.

More than 100 volunteers from Christian Surfers UK helped organise the event and places were full in most categories with a top field of competitors.

The weekend aims to be a complete festival with barbecue, big-screen movies, a skate competition on a purpose-built skate park and even a cake stall.

Visitors were also able to see an exhibition showing the work carried out by Christian Surfers UK and Tsunami Surf Relief UK.

Christian Surfers UK was set up in 1993 with the aim of presenting the Gospel to surfers in a relevant and meaningful way, and encouraging Christian growth, commitment and discipleship among surfers.

A spokesman for the organisation told ‘This Is Devon’: “Surfers are a group of people who rarely see the inside of a church and most churches have very little contact with surfers, yet those of us who surf know that there is a spiritual dimension to surfing and are determined to share it.”
