Indignant over the murder by the Colombian Army last Wednesday of a union miner and community leader, over a thousand colleagues and family members are gathered in Colombiaís Southern Bolivar region in his memory to curb a series of abuses that have taken place during the militaryís ìOperation Pharaohî ñ reports Christian Peacemaker Teams.

The families who arrived in Santa Rosa del Sur through the weekend organized a public action Sunday evening (24 September 2006), in which they claimed the presence and power of Alejandro Uribeís life in support of their struggle. Murdered defender of the poor Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador once famously said: ìIf they kill meÖ I will rise again in the peopleî

Uribe, President of a local town council, was murdered last Wednesday, according to local residents, by members of the Armyís Nueva Granada Battalion. Less than two weeks before, he had publicly denounced Army abuses against civilians aimed at facilitating mineral extraction by the Colombian KEDAHDA S.A. company, affiliated with multinational AngloGold Ashanti, among the worldís largest gold producers.

Public witness actions by the displaced minerís and families are expected to continue Monday, and a meeting between local and national government officials and representatives of the communities and human rights defenders is scheduled for Tuesday 26 September.
