Lawrie Sanchez, Manager of the Northern Ireland football team has set the ball rolling for Christian aid agency World Vision’s ë3,000 Sponsors Appealí.
Lawrie Sanchez used a giant 7ft tall version of the popular 80ís executive toy, The Newtonís Cradle, to show the knock-on effect of child sponsorship in the developing world.
The release of the first oversized ball set in motion the campaign which runs throughout September and calls on people to help find 3,000 new sponsors for children living in extreme poverty across the globe.
World Visionís Marketing Manager for Child Sponsorship, Matt Marlow said, ìWe feel that Newtonís Cradle symbolises the very real effect that child sponsorship has on not just the individual sponsored child, but also the whole community. Newton said that a force generates a motion, a double force will generate double the motion, a triple force triple the motion, whether that be altogether or successively. For every child sponsor we have in Northern Ireland, there will be a life changing effect on at least four others in the childís community. Just one sponsor is a huge force for good, so imagine what a force 3,000 new sponsors can make. And once we all set this in motion, these children and their communities will continue to benefit for many years. The force behind this motion is the people of Northern Ireland.î
Matt continued, ìChild Sponsorship, which costs £18 per month, a mere 60p per day, not only helps the child, but is also filtered through to the community in which the child lives, in the form of safe water, food, basic healthcare and immunisation ñ sponsoring one child can potentially help five people. In the developing world, one child dies every 3 seconds because of the basic lack of safe water, healthcare, shelter or food ñ the things we often take for granted.î
Lawrie Sanchez said, ìIt is really shocking to find out that for less than 60p a day we can save the life of a child in a developing country. Things like clean water, food and travel are taken for granted here. Some children in Northern Ireland make a fuss about having to get the bus to school but many children in developing countries have to walk miles to get there. I am glad to be giving my support to such a worthwhile cause. I know that the 3,000 target was achieved last year and I hope that the people of Northern Ireland can beat it in 2006.î
Celebrities like Lawrie are backing World Visionís ë3,000 Sponsors Appealí which runs from the 1st to 30th September 2006.
