Alternative Gift Catalogue launched by World Vision
-10/10/06
Christian charity World Vision has launched its new Alternative Gift Catalogue for Christmas 2006 with 35 new and inspiring ethical gifts added to its range.
The charity hit the headlines at last year with its scheme which allows goats, cows, chickens and pigs to be sent to the developing world on someone else’s behalf.
World Vision said it raised over £5 million pounds last year through the Alternative Gift Catalogue.
But whilst it all started with goats, you can now send over 80 different gifts from a mosquito net to help prevent the spread of malaria for £6 right through to a bore hole allowing hundreds in Zambia to get safe, clean water for £6,000.
Of course there are still the popular cuddly animal gifts too in this year’s Alternative Gift Catalogue, like a ram and an Ox.
One of the great appeals of the Alternative Gift Catalogue has been that it is so easy to purchase the gifts online at the Alternative Gift Catalogue site. You simply select your gift, and then a card with a personalised message, which is sent to the person on whose behalf you are making the gift.
The Alternative Gift Catalogue is part of World Vision’s carefully planned initiatives to help some of the world’s poorest communities make their way out of poverty. This is because the gifts arrive in the context of World Vision’s long-term development programmes. Here, community leaders and local committees helped by dedicated national staff-identify their needs and priorities, including the gifts featured in the Alternative Gift catalogue. It means the gifts you buy are really needed – and will be treasured when they arrive, says the World Vision charity.
And in the event that the gifts that are purchased are over funded, they will send an equally needed gift to those in need. This is only done after all community requests represented in the Alternative Gift catalogue have been fulfilled.
It is this kind of smart thinking that has made World Vision, which is a Christian charity, one of the world’s leading relief, development and justice agencies. They are also one of the largest- presently helping more than 100 million people in nearly 100 countries in their struggle against poverty, hunger and injustice, irrespective of their religious beliefs.
