Pattaya orphanage launches ‘Puppets for Peace’ screensaver

The Pattaya Orphanage Trust in Thailand has launched an attractive screensaver to support its ‘Puppets for Peace’ campaign, reports Independent Catholic News.
The screensaver depicts an animated version of a special story of peace created by the Thai Nithan Caravan Puppet Troupe, who use play and storytelling to help young people deal with traumatic events, such as the 2004 tsunami and current conflict in the Southern provinces of Thailand.
Although the situation in Thailand means it is currently dangerous to travel in the southernmost provinces of the country, ruling out a visit by the troupe, the performers hope to send every one of the 210 schools in the region a special storytelling apron and puppets, with a specially scripted story, to help spread a message of peace and understanding to young people confronted with violence.
The Pattaya Orphanage Trust is asking supporters to donate just £20 to buy an apron and set of puppets. Each apron has a pouch in the front, in which the characters in the story are hidden. As the story unfolds, the storyteller takes each character out, interacts with them, then fastens them to the front of the apron until they appear in the story again.
Andrew Scadding, Chief Executive of the Pattaya Orphanage Trust, said: “We hope the new screensaver will not only entertain, but involve more people in this campaign to help children facing violence and danger in their everyday lives.”
“The majority of children seeing the puppet shows do not have access to television, let alone live entertainers, so are fascinated by what they see. The children are encouraged to join in, and by taking part can express themselves and begin, however slowly, to open up. Through the new screensaver, we are taking news of this campaign to the computers of our supporters and the wider public.”
To download the screensaver, or see video footage of a Nithan Caravan Puppet Troupe performance, visit the Pattaya Orphanage Trust website.
