Vatican special adviser on disarmament arrives in UK to address Trident replacement

Douglas Roche, former Canadian parliamentarian, diplomat and specialist in peace and human security issues, is to speak at the Scottish Parliament today on the issue of Trident replacement.
The meeting is the first in a series during which he will address Church leaders in England and Scotland on the subject of nuclear disarmament and the role of the churches.
Mr Roche, who has specialized throughout his 34-year public career in peace and human security issues, is a guest of Pax Christi, the international Catholic movement for peace.
The meetings come at a time when there is growing opposition being expressed by churches throughout the UK, to a replacement for Trident.

Pax Christi is anxious to encourage greater debate within the Catholic church and the wider ecumenical community on the subject.
Today (Tuesday) Mr Roche, along with catholic Cardinal Keith O’Brien, will be welcomed at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh with a reception of MSPs and church leaders. This evening he will be a keynote speaker at a public meeting on the theme “Nuclear Weapons – The Time to Disarm in Now”.
Tomorrow Mr Roche will speak with Revd Alan McDonald, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, at a closed ecumenical seminar in central London. The purpose of the seminar is to stimulate the churches in England and Wales to reflect on their role in challenging government policy on nuclear defence and to listen a call for solidarity from the churches in Scotland who have have already begun this process.
