Concerns have been expressed by church leaders and development workers after the latest outbreak of violence in the north-western province of Tete, Mozambique.

A group of unidentified attackers broke into the Jesuit residence in Angone, part of the Diocese of Tete, early on Monday 6 November 2006.

They ended up killing Brazilian Jesuit priest Waldar dos Santos, aged 69, and Idalina Neto Gomes, aged 30, a volunteer of the Portuguese Lay for Development association.

According to the Catholic Information Service for Africa, another Brazilian, Fr Mario J. de Almeida, aged 37, and Brother JosÈ Ara?jo de Andrade, aged 76, were wounded in the attack.

The assailants then escaped in a car belonging to the Jesuit community, according to a statement published by the missionary news agency MISNA.

“They surprised the [priests] in their rooms and immediately demanded money. One of the [men] attempted to resist and the assailants shot him dead and wounded another two”, a source told MISNA.

In the residence there were some volunteers of the Portuguese Lay for Development association.

“A volunteer attempted to escape, but one of the assailants stabbed her to death. When the police arrived the thieves had already escaped with a sum of money and a vehicle of the community,” the reporter said.

“We were surprised and shocked. But the Diocese of Tete has often been theatre to violence and robberies against both religious and lay.”
