Theologians have been criticised by an influential committee, for being “virtually silent” about the protection of victims of child abuse.
A report by the church and nation committee, published yesterday, called on the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland to show regret for the Kirkís record on the issue.
The report cites cases in which members of the Church suppressed or even participated in abuse.
It also highlights the case of a “professional man and church elder” who abused and harassed his wife and children for more than 20 years and a minister who “habitually subjected his wife to degrading sexual demands”.
The committee recommends an overhaul of the Kirkís approach to domestic violence, including addressing the issue at universities and the Department of Ministry.
