Aid agencies reach Basra

-16/4/03

A team of workers from Christian Aid will today head for Basra to give out water and essential medical supplies, the charity announced.

It will be the first time foreign aid agencies have been into the southern Iraqi city because the military still regard the area as too dangerous.

So far, most international aid agencies have been unable to work beyond the town of Um Qasr, near the Kuwaiti border. But the Iraqi Aid Refugee Council (IRAC), which has been working with refugees in Iran for the past eight years has now set up an office in the war-torn city and is preparing to take in medical supplies.

The charity team, which includes workers from Unicef and the Norwegian Church, will head for Basra as part of an aid convoy taking in water and vital medical goods right into the battered heart of Iraqís second city.

The convoy will be bringing in medical supplies including insulin, anaesthetics and oxygen, which are all in very short supply. There has been a breakdown in medical supplies in Iraq because pharmaceutical factories have stopped operating.

They will also be bringing in gas cylinders for cooking.
