Members of peace teams, including many Christians are returning from Iraq and talking of the immense suffering that the people of the country continue to experience.
Many of the peace teams were expelled by Iraqi authorities just before US tanks entered Baghdad. A member of one of those teams, Dave Havard, returned from the UK today. He spent the last few days in Jordan co-ordinating with those peacemakers still in Iraq.
Speaking on his return he said; “I feel a tremendous grief for all the suffering I have seen in Baghdad. The situation got a whole lot worse immediately after US troops entered the city and I know that the suffering will continue for a very long time.î
Havard was in Baghdad with the joint Iraq Peace Team made up of people from Christian Peacemaker Teams and the group Voices in the Wilderness.
The teams went to show solidarity with the people of Iraq, and where possible prevent coalition destruction of infrastructure, similar to the actions of ‘Human Shields’.
Whilst there Havard visited Iraqi families and documented the effects of war.
ìI am very angry at my own government and that of the US for invading these cities without any plan to protect hospitals and essential services. That is yet another crime against humanity committed as part of this illegal invasion of Iraq. May God have mercy on us all,” he said.
Christian Peacemaker Teams have had a full-time presence in Iraq since Oct 25, 2002.
