The Christian Peopleís Alliance (CPA) confirmed yesterday that it will field a candidate in next years elections for London Mayor, meaning that at least two Christians will compete against each other for the post.
Ram Gidoomal announced yesterday that he had been chosen by his party as their Prospective Candidate for the mayoral race. However he will stand against another well-known Christian, the Lib Dem MP Simon Hughes.
The Liberal Democratsí home affairs spokesman and the MP for North Southwark and Bermondsey who is well known for is faith, was selected as the Lib Dem mayoral candidate at the beginning of March.
Gidoomal announced his bid for London Mayor yesterday whilst speaking at a conference in Westminster on the importance of small and medium sized enterprises.
He said; “To maintain its competitive place in the European economy, London requires leadership that promotes business enterprise and which also rises to the challenges of social exclusion, ethnic diversity and the long-term requirements of investment in the capital’s infrastructure. ì
He continued; ìMy aim in this campaign is to raise issues others won’t or cannot and to offer a real alternative to those who despair of the big parties.”
With two Christians running against each other, the election campaign may well re-ignite the long-running debate about the merits of different Christian approaches to political involvement.
The Christian groupings within the main political parties; The Conservative Christian Fellowship, the Christian Socialist Movement and the Liberal Democrat Christian Forum have raised concerns that a Christian Democrat party such as the Christian Peopleís Alliance will sideline Christian involvement in public life.
The Christian Peopleís Alliance contested the last mayoral election in London but failed to gain a seat on the London Assembly.
