The political dimension of the Easter story and the message of non-violence will be examined in a BBC network programme to be presented by the General Director of the Evangelical Alliance.

Entitled ëThe Crucified Kingí the Rev Joel Edwards, will present the programme on Good Friday morning which will take the form of a meditation on the life and work of Dr Martin Luther King Jnr.

Joel will follow in the footsteps of the assassinated civil rights activist and look at the significance of the Cross and Good Friday in his life and work.

ìThe Cross of Christ stood at the very heart of Martin Luther Kingís teaching about non-violent resistance and the transforming power of unearned suffering.” Edwards said.

“ëThe Crucified Kingí is not just about the way in which the story of Jesus illuminated the life of one of the greatest figures in history. Itës about how the message of Good Friday and the resurrected Christ at Easter can change lives and motivate action on behalf of humanity.”

Visiting Birmingham, Alabama, where on Good Friday 1963 King marched in defiance of the cityís segregation laws, Joel will reflect that he deliberately chose this holy day to identify with the suffering and passion of Jesus Christ and to dramatise the injustices of segregation in the Deep South of the USA.

During the programme Joel will visit both Atlanta, Georgia, where King was raised and later ministered and Memphis, Tennessee, where he was killed.

Among the highlights of Joelís trip was a meeting with Bernice King, the youngest of Kingís children who was just five when her father died. Her life has been deeply influenced by her father and she has followed him into Christian ministry.

Of their meeting, Joel said; ìMeeting Bernice King was inspirational as she recounted how her father, faced with death threats and the heavy demands of leadership, underwent a deep, mystical spiritual experience in which he felt empowered by Jesus to stand up for justice.”

ìI was thrilled to be involved in the making and presentation of the programme and hope that viewers will be inspired and challenged by its message to remember the meaning of Good Friday!î

ëThe Crucified Kingí ñ a meditation for Good Friday – is produced and directed by Iwan Russell-Jones and can be seen on Friday, 18th April on BBC ONE from 10.00-11.00am.
