The Evangelical Alliance has congratulated the BBC soap, EastEnders, for its ìsympatheticî and ìpositiveî portrayal of Dot Cottonís `crisis of faithí in one of its current storylines.
In a move that will be seen as surprising by many, Don Horrocks, the Allianceís public affairs manager said; ìWe compliment the BBC for its authentic representation of spiritual struggle and the positive therapeutic power of prayer and forgiveness through the Cross of Christ”.
Suggesting that there was a tendency by broadcasters to misrepresent Christianity and “reduce it to the absurd and nonsensicalî he added; ìthe sympathetic interpretation of the characterís spiritual journey revealed a genuine and informed understanding and appreciation of the conflict between faith and experience which remains at the heart of the Christian story.”
The statement by the Evangelical Alliance is likley to be seen as a welcome departure from more reactionary comments that are often made by Evangelical pressure groups.
Apparently keen to focus on the theological aspects of the Eastenders storyline Horricks said; ìRecognition of deep human transformation made possible through human and divine love and forgiveness remain the essence of the Christian gospel.î
