A vote by Bishops in Scotland has paved the way for the first female Anglican bishop in Britain who could be appointed next year.
The Synod of the Scottish Episcopal Church backed the ordination of women bishops by 124 votes to 24.
A spokeswoman for the synod, called the result momentous.
The vote in Edinburgh is expected to put pressure on the Church of England as a whole to welcome women bishops as Anglicans have done in the United States, Canada, Polynesia and New Zealand. Ireland voted to allow women bishops but has yet to appoint one.
The vote follows a 12-month consultation process after 80 per cent of the synod backed the proposal a year ago.
The first opportunity for a woman to be selected to head a Scottish diocese will come in October 2004 when the Right Rev Douglas Cameron, the Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, is due to retire. There are seven bishops in the Scottish Episcopal Church.
