The dispute over the Church of England’s stance on homosexuality could come to a head this week as the issue is debated at a major gathering.
Around 2,000 Evangelicals are set to meet in Blackpool – the biggest gathering for 15 years.
The Fourth National Evangelical Anglican Congress
(NEAC) takes place from 19th ñ 23rd September 2003 at the Blackpool Winter Gardens.
Senior evangelicals are expected to call for the Church of America and Canada to be suspended from the Anglican Communion for allowing a gay man to become a bishop.
It is estimated that a third of Anglican churchgowers are Evangelical – and their numbers are growing.
Canon Gene Robinson, divorced gay father of two, has been appointed a Bishop in America.
The move provoked worldwide controversy.
In Britain, gay priest Canon Jeffrey John turned down a post as Bishop after his appointment caused a major row within the church.
The Anglican church in Nigeria was particularly vociferous, threatening a major split in the church.
Same-sex blessings and the appointment of gay bishops have caused such a huge rift in the Church of England that the Archbishop of Canterbury has organised an emergency summit.
It will take place at Lambeth palace in London next month.
