The Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Rev Richard Harries, has said that he almost resigned in protest when Canon Jeffrey John was forced to step down as Bishop of Reading.
Writing in his diocesan newspaper, Bishop Harries denounced the “unjust” treatment of Canon John, who withdrew in July.
The bishop vigorously defended his choice for the suffragan post, and argued that he would eventually have overcome the objections of church conservatives.
In an outspoken article, he also accused nine fellow bishops of a “grave breach of collegiality” for sending a letter to the press criticising the appointment.
Bishop Harries also disclosed that he had checked the suitability of Canon John with Dr Williams very early in the process.
Previously, the impression given was that Dr Williams had not known that the canon was even in the running until Bishop Harries had decided to nominate him and forward his name to the Queen.
