Christian Peacemaker Teams in Iraq say that they have an eyewitness account of the killing of an Iraqi civilian by US soldiers.
The testimony comes from a translator who was working with US forces in Iraq.
Mazin Juuma says that he was on patrol with US forces when soldiers created a new checkpoint.
An hour later, a man who was on his way home, came unexpectedly upon the checkpoint but was unable to stop his car in time and swerved to avoid it.
Without any warning soldiers opened fire, shooting the man in the chest, the head and shoulders.
The driver lost control of the vehicle and came to a
stop.
In his testimony taken by Christian Peacemaker Teams, the 27 year old translator said; “The lieutenant in charge of the patrol asked the victim to get out of the car but the man was dying. The officer then pulled the victim out of the car and dragged him twenty-five meters across the road by his collar.”
“Two other soldiers, a man and a woman, came over the body and aimed their rifles at him. I asked them why do you target your weapons at him? Are you threatened by him in this condition? They left him for forty-five minutes-bleeding-while they checked the car. They didn’t find any weapons. When they finished they came and put the body on top of the Humvee. They tied him on the hood. He was still alive.”
“Before they put him on the Humvee, they checked his pockets and found his I.D. They showed it to me to read for them but there was a bullet hole through his name. I could see his first name was Abdal Wahab, but I couldn’t see his father’s name (Abd Razak) because of the hole. I put the I.D. on the dashboard of the car, and we pushed the car to the Al Sina sport club, the nearest point to the incident. The neighbors and the guards working at the sports club observed the coalition forces coming later to take the I.D.”
Wahad, a 39-year-old mechanic, was the
father of five children. His youngest daughter was born after his death.
Another man in a vehicle was also shot in the eye by a stray bullet and killed.
Details of the full testimony can be found on the Christian Peacemaker Teams website along with other human right abuses recorded by the teams in Iraq http://www.cpt.org/iraq/iraq.php
