The new Bishop of Reading was revealed today following the row over the post after it was offered to the gay but celibate cleric Canon Jeffrey John.
Downing Street was expected to announce this morning that the Queen has approved the nomination of the new bishop who has not been named in advance.
The post will go to Canon Stephen Cottrell, 45, pastor at Peterborough Cathedral and a member of the College of Evangelists, according to The Times.
The appointment follows the selection of Canon Jeffrey John as Bishop of Reading last year by the Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Rev Richard Harries.
He later withdrew his acceptance after a high profile campaign against his appointment by Church of England traditionalists.
The row came before the consecration in the US of openly gay Canon Gene Robinson as Bishop of New Hampshire.
