Church Action on Poverty have worked with Positive Action in Housing to produce a simple, easy to read pack that gives the information, advice and encouragement to take action to stop the destitution of people refused asylum. It is the latest development in their ‘Living Ghosts’ campaign, in which people have been encouraged to live for a short period as failed asylum seekers, to see how it feels for themselves.
A destitute asylum seeker is homeless and has no right to any social housing. They are not allowed to work and risk imprisonment if they do. They cannot claim any benefits or tax credits, or get any support from the National Asylum Support Service (NASS). They will have been evicted from their home, with possibly only 7 days notice, may be pregnant, disabled or a survivor of torture.
The new pack uniquely links up practical support with campaigning, and is available online to download. The pack covers what causes the destitution, frequently asked questions, how to support accommodation and hardship funds around the UK, how to campaign to end destitution by lobbying your MP, sleeping out, and trying the Endurance Challenge and how to raise awareness – with films, speakers, performances and the media.
