Three leading church-related organisations – Pax Christi (the Catholic peace movement), the Fellowship of Reconciliation and St Ethelberga’s Centre for Peace and Reconciliation are co-hosts of an evening in central London looking at nonviolence in the midst of conflict.
The meeting takes place at St Ethelburga’s, which was formerly a church partially destroyed by an IRA bomb, on 24 July 2007. The theme is “Persistent Peacemaking: Keeping faith with nonviolence in a time of war.”
The evening will feature contributions from two long-time Christian peace activists, one from the USA and one from Palestine-Israel.
Jesuit priest John Dear is a peace activist, author and editor of 25 books on nonviolence and peacemaking from the United States.
Zoughbi Zoughbi is a Palestinian Christian, Director of the Palestinian Centre for Conflict Resolution in Bethlehem.
The need for creative nonviolent alternatives in conflict situations which have suffered endemic violence and external military interventions is a growing concern among those seeking prcatical alternatives to cycles of war and terror.
The evening begins at 6.30pm at St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation & Peace, 78 Bishopsgate, London EC2N 4AG, and is part of a ‘Rediscovering Nonviolence’ series.
