Quakers accept and implement gay marriage

The Quakers rank among the oldest Christian denominations in the United Kingdom. Both traditional but open minded, this religious group has been supporting same sex unions for over two decades and are now looking to implement marriage services to couples of the same sex. This is a very positive change that has been received with joy by the Quakers community who felt that both they and society at large has already held religious services for same-sex couples who have had civil ceremonies.

Setting aside the fancy dress ideas for the happy event, this decision by the Quakers is in overt conflict with the resolutions taken by the government. The religious group seems to be decided, however, and will probably reach consensus on the issue of gay marriage without resorting to the formal vote at their annual gathering in York. The Quakers have also stated that, would this consensus be reached, they will formally request the government to change the law to allow gay people to marry.

The move is attracting a lot of attention from other religious groups who are adamant in their opposition to the idea. As we all know, the issue of homosexuality as a whole has caused several confrontations (sometimes major) within the Christian community, both in the United Kindgom and internationally. The Quakers have allowed local groups to celebrate same sex commitments through special ceremonies but many British Quakers felt wrong to exclude the full religious commitment from civil partnerships who want to have a religious marriage.

In my personal opinion, the decision by one of the oldest and most traditional religious communities on the country to support inclusion rather than exclusion is as refreshing as needed. We will hopefully have integrated the gay communities to the society as a whole way before we run around the streets in space costumes… at least, I hope so.
