Church of Scotland debate ministers and same sex marriage
The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland is to debate whether congregations should be allowed to consider calling a person in a same-sex marriage as a minister or deacon.

Global unemployment set to rise warns UN agency
Despite falling unemployment in some developed economies, the global jobs crisis is likely to continue for at least the next two years, especially in emerging economies, topping 200 million by 2017, the United Nations labour agency has warned, calling for urgent steps to boost jobs.

Appeal Court rules Schedule 7 incompatible with Human Rights Act
The power to stop, search, detain, question and seize documents from anyone travelling through a UK airport under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 is incompatible with Article 10 of the Human Rights Act, the Court of Appeal ruled yesterday (19 January).

Catholic-Lutheran ‘Common Prayer’ for 500 years of Reformation
The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity (PCPCU) have invited Lutheran churches and Catholic bishops’ conferences across the world to make use of a jointly-developed Common Prayer to prepare commemorations for the 500 years of the Reformation in 2017.

Following the WCC/UNl conference on the refugee crisis in Europe at the Ecumenical Centre Geneva on 18-19 January, a statement has been issued entitled “Europe’s Response to the Refuge Crisis, From Origin to Transit, Reception and Refuge, A Call for Shared Responsibility and Coordinated Action”.

Taliban attack on university an ‘affront to humanity’ says Amnesty
The armed men who carried out the deadly armed attack on Bacha Khan University in Charsadda, north-western Pakistan, violated the central principle of international humanitarian law by deliberately targeting civilians in what appears to be a war crime, says Amnesty International.

Conference urges greater cooperation over refugee crisis
A High-Level Conference of governments, United Nations agencies and civil society organisations in Geneva, including churches and faith-based organisations, has underlined the need for urgent action to strengthen coordination and cooperation in Europe’s response to the refugee and migrant crisis.
